Minutes from the Tuesday September 3, 2024 City of Jeanerette Public Works and Safety Committee Meeting
Present- Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr., Alderman Ray Duplechain, City Clerk Susan Colden, Finance Manager Christie Connor, Chief Dusty Vallot, Chief Sherry Landry, Elizabeth Moore and Lawanda Robertson from Public and Anderson Clay and Scott Landry from Statewide Electric. Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. called the meeting to order and led the prayer. Chief Vallot and Chief Landry had to leave for a call. The Mayor read the police report, there were 145 calls for the month with 2 tickets, 5 summons for misdemeanor arrests and 4 district felony arrests. The Mayor briefly mentioned the incident the week before when the individual lit a Molotov cocktail in the lobby of City Hall. Alderman Duplechain asked about the event that occurred on Main Street, the Mayor replied that it appears a man died from natural causes. Chief Landry returned and reported that they completed fire drills at Senior High school and St. Charles Elementary. August 22nd they went to Iberia Training Center for Wall Breach Training (power point to hands on). On August 27th, the department participated in an EV training from LAFA vis Zoom. Unit 641, the 2020 Dodge Ram is in for repairs, water pump. The ice machine is broken, calling for service. The annual servicing of the extrication tools was performed. The department will be hosting hazmat training taught by FETA this evening and tomorrow evening. The Mayor commended the professionalism shown by Chief Landry and her department for their efforts involving the explosive device last Wednesday at City Hall. Next Mr. Anderson Clay from Statewide Electric reported on water operations. With the exception of the softeners, everything is working at the water plant. They are waiting for components to be installed to regulate the flow of brine. The amount of pot perm is being increased to lower the manganese. When the softeners get online then they can reduce the hardness. They only had one or two complaints of discolored water. They have been flushing the ground storage tanks and have seen clearing of discolored water. They are planning another City wide flush. Chief Landry said they are ordering 10 hydrants. There was a discussion of where the hydrants will be placed. The Mayor asked about the leak on the brine tank and Anderson said they could repair it, but they would need the brine out of it. The lift stations are working, the number 2 pump was installed at St. Nicholas, they are waiting on a flange to install #2 pump at St. Paul Lane. They are trying to figure out with the concrete building, how to replace the pump at King Joseph. Next, Scott Landry reported on the sewer plant, and said that the chemicals have been adjusted and they are now passing samples. The return sludge pump is in place but needs final items installed to be operational. Elizabeth Moore gave the public works report. Gravel was put down in alley by Lapeyrouse. Thirteen dotties were marked, 26 ditches were cut and trash removed. Grass was cut in 37 locations, and a tree was removed from the roadway. A meter was installed at O’Reilly’s, and 3 sewer backups were cleared. Alderman Duplechain reported the Veteran’s association was great with packing up the flags on Main Street so they can be used next year. With no other business to consider the meeting was adjourned.
